The market is dominated by the Big
4 and if you have qualified with one of these firms
then although you will have been through the same type
of external training and sat the same exams as your
ACA contemporaries, your work experience will have been
very different to somebody that trained with a mid-tier
or smaller firm where the client profile is significantly
different to the Big 4.
The role of the Professional Firms
has changed significantly over the past few years with
changes in legislation and regulation forcing a shift
in emphasis. In the Big 4 that were originally driven
by assurance and compliance based offerings, around
80% of their fee income is now generated from advisory
and consultancy based work and this change is reflected
in the diversity of roles available to newly qualified
accountants.
If you decide to stay in the profession
after qualifying in order to consolidate your experience
(and actually develop your skills on the job rather
than in the class room) you may decide to either stay
with the same firm and continue your Audit & Assurance
work in order to gain exposure to clients in particular
industry sectors and increase your industry knowledge,
or you may decide to specialise with another department
such as Corporate Finance, Taxation, Insolvency, Risk
Management or Compliance.
You may also decide to move
within the profession - A Big 4 qualified accountant
may want to experience life in a smaller firm where
there will be opportunities to be more hands on and
learn about business in the SME owner-managed / family
owned business market, where entrepreneurs tend to flourish
and where business is not as regulated as the FTSE 100
club. In addition the route to Partner may be easier
and faster in a smaller firm. Conversely you may want
to move from a smaller firm to a Big 4 in order to see
the other side of the fence. The choice if yours!
